A Symposium

at his boyhood home
Jackson's Mill
Weston, West Virginia

 


Proceeds from this event will go to the rebuilding
of the one-room school at his boyhood home
where Thomas Jackson once taught.


Thursday, November 2

7 p.m. - Registration & Opening Reception


Friday, November 3

8 a.m.- 9 a.m. - Registration & Continental Breakfast

9 a.m. - Bus departs for day long tour of area sites relating to the Jackson family and T. J. Jackson's early years.

6 p.m. - Buffet at Jackson's Mill Dining Hall


Saturday, November 4

8 a.m.-9 a.m. - Continental Breakfast

9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. - Seminars and hands on education.

Topics to include:

Laura Jackson Arnold-his beloved sister. Hear her story from orphan to her childhood years at the Mill with the Jackson clan and how her life played out after she left the Mill. How did the war affect Laura Jackson and what effect did her big brother’s fame have on her and her family.

Brig. Gen Joseph Lightburn-Tom Jackson’s boyhood friend. A friend who opened up the world of books and education to the young boy.

Life at the Mill-what was it like for a young boy to grow up on a bustling active farm in the early 19th century. What skills did he acquire to work the farm and what was daily life like. Hands on education at his boyhood home will also be included.

His Early Years-Savor the environment he grew up in and learn about the Appalachian people and why so much of what he became is deeply imbedded in Appalachia.

Family History-ever wonder if you’re related to the large Jackson clan. A seminar on Tom Jackson’s genealogy by a Jackson family member with family stories.


6 p.m. - Dinner with Guest Speaker:

Sunday, November 5

8:30 a.m.-10 a.m. - Continental Breakfast and saying good bye to new friends.

11 a.m. - Optional church services at Broad Run Baptist Church where young Thomas J. Jackson attended.


Please join us for an exciting and informative weekend learning more about one of "the greatest natural military geniuses the world ever saw." Tom Jackson's "magnetic personal leadership, which so dominated and inspired his men, constituted only one of his many attributes of greatness." We will spend the weekend learning about his childhood, his boyhood friends, his happiness and his sorrows. What made him the man he became. Walk the ground he walked; savor the environment he grew up in and learn about the Appalachian people and why so much of what he became is deeply imbedded in
Appalachia.


Registration Fee: $140 (includes all meals and transportation on Friday)

Space is limited so please register early.

Special housing arrangements have been made at WVU Jackson's Mill. A limited number of rooms are available on a first come first served request to stay at the newly renovated lodge at WVU Jackson's Mill.

Walk the grounds where Stonewall grew to manhood
where he worked and played.

Stroll down to the Mill and gaze across the river and think of his dying words, "Let us cross over the river and rest under the shade of the trees."

Truly a unique experience.

The original farm had 1,500 acres and 525 of those acres have been preserved.

A special room rate has been secured for this special weekend at our other local hotels.
